They start attending school from the age of 5. Schools are open from 8 to 6 pm, as opposed to some Hungarian schools closing after 5 pm. English students have lessons going on from 9 am to 4 pm and they have a lunch break at 1 pm. Half of them have lunch provided by schools in canteens. In their 7th and 11th class, they have national tests in English, Maths and Science. Public exams (e.g. the equivalent of "érettségi") are organized neither by schools, but an independent exam board. There is no fixed age limit (i.e. they can take exams when they are 65 years old, etc). They can leave school after the age of 16. (although Hungarian law has the same age limit now, too, it used to be the age of 18). 1/3 of them choose to leave school, but take part-time courses. At the age of 16 can take the Ordinary level exam, while at the age of 18, they can take the Advanced level exam. University entry is based on basics of Advanced level exam + the interview.
